The Man from Nowhere

The Man from Nowhere is a 2010 South Korean action thriller film. The film follows the story of Cha, a vengeful man who embarks on a murderous rampage when the only person who seems to understand him is taken from him.

Cha is a man who leads a simple and quiet life as a pawn shop broker. He tries to keep everyone around him at a distance however the persistence of one young girl (So-mi) eventually wears him down and he welcomes her into his life. So-mi's mother is a drug addict who is always verbally abusing and ignoring her daughter completely. As a result of this So-mi visits Cha daily and an odd but effective friendship develops between the two. Cha's simple and quite life comes to an end when one day the adorable little girl who lives upstairs is kidnapped by drug dealers angry with her mother for stealing their product. The gangsters blackmail Cha, then frame him and leave him for the cops but Cha busts out of jail and goes on a quest to save his So-mi and make the people who took her pay. Will Cha be able to get his revenge?

The action scenes of this movies are choreographed perfectly with no real effects. The development of the characters are done perfectly and you may even find yourself caring for the little girl. At the end you will learn that everyone gets what they deserve. This will be a very sweet movie for everyone to watch. You will not be disappointed!

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 drama film. The movie is set in India, and starts off with Jamal Malik, who is played by Dev Patel, who appears on the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. One question stands between him and the 1 Million dollars, but how did a poor and uneducated kid make it this far? He is taken into custody by police for cheating. He is forced to explain how he learned every single answer, he tells them his amazing and at times heart wrenching struggles of his life.

This movie is known for the flash back of Jamal’s life, starting from when he was very little in an orphanage. They take us back to experience a journey of non-stop thrill ride of the positives and negatives of street life in India. It also has a love story for those romantics!

This is definitely one of those movies that you will feel good about afterwards, and it definitely one of my favourite films to have watched.

Kung Fu Hustle

Kung Fu Hustle is a 2004 Honk Kong action comedy film starring Stephen Chow as Sing. It is set in 1940s Shanghai where Sing attempts to join the notorious Axe Gang by impersonating as a member along with his sidekick. They attempt to blackmail the residents of a slum called “The Pig Sty Alley,” but were surprised to find that the residents, led by the Landlord and the Landlady  are not what they appear. The real members of the Axe Gang have joined in and it is revealed that several residents are martial arts masters. Then comes a battle between a powerful gang and the lowly residents of the slum with Sing caught in the middle of it. Sing, does not realize it, but he is deep down changing inside into a righteous martial arts master.

The action choreography to this film is simply mind-blowing. It may seem cartoonish at times, but it makes the film all the more enjoyable. Overall, the movie is extremely entertaining and it kept me at the edge of my seat right until the end.

Elysium

Elysium is a 2013 American dystopia science fiction action thriller film. The film is set in 2154, where Earth has been destroyed by disease, pollution, and overpopulation. The wealthiest now live on a space station called Elysium, which can be seen in the clouds from Earth below. Max has grown up watching Elysium from his run-down, neighbourhood. He now has a factory job which has terrible working conditions.

The people on Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they desperatelu need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium including Max, however the people on Elysium prevent this as they want to protect this luxurious lifestyle from others. Matt decides to take matters into his own hands and stop this inequality.  Will he succeed?  Will he be able to save not only his own life, but the millions of people on Earth as well?

Elysium’s strengths are its spectacular imagery and thrilling action sequences. Blomkamp has imagined and brought to life two stunningly realised worlds. The crowded streets of Los Angeles are overrun by slums and a heavy, pulsating score perfectly complements the scenes of rampant urban sprawl. Meanwhile, scenes of Elysium’s lush lawns and wealthy mansions are imbued with an aura of sterilization, of an enforced purity. And when the boundary between these two worlds collapses the action is brutal, bloody and vicious.

Frozen

Frozen is a 2013 American computer animated musical fantasy film. The film tells the story of a fearless princess who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged, thrill-seeking mountain man, his loyal pet reindeer, and a hapless snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.

Frozen attracts Disney lovers as they continue crafting movies that stay true to the quasi-Disney tradition.  I really enjoyed this movie. Disney is really on a roll when it comes to solid emotional cores in their animated films.

Overall, Frozen was less about the songs than it was about the characters and the humor. As a musical, it did feel a little light, but I didn't mind overall, as it got everything else right. And some of the songs they did have were really, really good. I'm plenty happy for how it turned out; even saw it for the second time this week. It's in my Top Five Plot-Based Animated Films of All Time. It's certainly far better than anything they've done in years. They're going in the right direction.

Secretly, Greatly

Secretly, Greatly is a 2013 South Korean action comedy drama. film about North Korean spies who infiltrate South Korea as a village idiot, a rock musician, and a high school student, respectively.

Won-ryu lives in a village as a idiot as the residents call him however he is actually an elite North Korean captain and spy who has been sent to South Korea awaiting orders. After 2 years undercover, suddenly another two North Korean soldiers, Hae-rang disguised as a singer/musician and Hye-jin who respects and admires Won-ryu greatly disguised as a high school student appear in the village. Won-ryu starts to feel suspicious of this and suddenly an order comes for all the spies to commit suicide which they cannot understand. The three betray orders reluctantly to get answers as to why this order was sent out, while being chased by their own countries soldiers because of the betrayal.

Secretly and Greatly is the most attractive movie for those who prefer action and comedy Korean films. As this movie has been directed based on the background of 1980, audience would be able to understand the environment, conditions and cultures of South Korea. It is very hilarious but also it touches audiences’ minds, it gives a great emotion that a family is the most important part in our lives.

This is a great movie from start to finish that will always make you laugh once in a while. The Google campus is a also very interesting place and the jokes in this movie were very entertaining. You will also get a feeling of what society is now today. Definitely a worth movie to watch for everyone.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

Do you love fantasy? Magic? Or what about adventure?

The Harry Potter series is the answer! It is a legendary series about an orphan named Harry, who is blessed to be an unique individual who knows witchcraft, and is the only one to have survived Lord Voldemort’s killing of his parents. Due to the amount of films in the series, the focus will be on the last instalment of the series.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is 2011 fantasy film starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. It is the second part the story based on the novel by J.K. Rowling. It is also the final instalment in the Harry Potter series.

The movie starts off with Harry, Ron and Hermionie, who are played by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson respectively, resuming their quest to destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes and in turn, killing Voldemort.

Will Harry finally be able to end the war and defeat Lord Voldemort? Or will it be him who is defeated? This is one movie you should not miss out!

This epic finale is a fitting end to a series that started more than 10 years ago. It is such a sad sight, seeing one of the great series come to an end, but as we know, all good things come to an end and this is no exception. The amazing visual effects combined with the music selection, especially the battles which are just breathtaking and wonderful to watch. This heart stopper is definitely on my ‘must watch movies’ list.

Taken

Taken is a 2008 English action, crime and thriller film about a retired CIA agent who travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save and track down his separated daughter from him, who has been kidnapped by human traffickers for sexual slavery while on a trip to Paris.

Seventeen year-old Kim is the pride and joy of her father Bryan Mills. Kim manages to convince her reluctant father to allow her to travel to Paris with her friend Amanda. When the girls arrive in Paris they share a cab with a stranger named Peter, and Amanda unknowingly let him know that they are alone in Paris. Using this information an Albanian gang of human traffickers kidnaps the girls. Kim barely has time to call her father and give him information. Her father gets to speak briefly to one of the kidnappers and he promises to kill the kidnappers if they do not let his daughter go free. The kidnapper wishes him "good luck," so Bryan travels to Paris to search for his daughter and her friend. Will he be able to save his daughter and her friend?
This is a fast pace moving film that will stay in your memory forever. Besides the action scenes there are also some scenes that are quite sensitive and touching. This film will not disappoint you and is highly recommended for all viewers.

Shaolin Soccer

Shaolin soccer is a 2001 hong kong comedy film starring famous hong kong comedy star Stephen Chow. Chow stars as Sing a poor man who makes a living on collecting cans and selling them. He was a former kung fu master whose life goal is to promote shaolin kung fu to society.

His life changes when he meets Ah Mui a tai chi master who makes buns and Fung a crippled retired soccer player whose dream is to win a championship. Fung was crippled by a man called Hung years ago who is a domineering figure in soccer and is the coach of championship soccer team.  Fung sees Sing’s shaolin skills and believes that Sing can put these skills to use in soccer and offers to coach Sing in soccer. Sing sees this as a great way to promote shaolin kung fu and forms a soccer team with his five former shaolin brothers.

Sunny

Sunny is a 2011 Korean comedy and drama film about the high school days and the deep meaning of friendship. This film is based on the bond of a group of female high school students. Na-mi is a housewife who has a wealthy husband, beautiful home and daughter. She looks perfect on the outside however she is actually depressed by her life. She is married to an unaffectionate husband and does not have a good relationship with her daughter. While visiting her mother in hospital she meets high school friend Chun-hwa who is in the terminal stages of cancer. With only two months of life left she asks Na-mi to find all the member of their high school group sunny for a reunion. Will Na-Mi be able to find all the members of sunny? Will Chun-hwa be able to see all the members of sunny again before she dies?

This film switches back and forth between when they were students to when they are adults. The characters in this film are all really simple, people who we may meet in real everyday life. You will be able to relate to the characters and enjoy the movie even more. You will be taken back to your high school days when you were happily relaxing with your friends. After watching this movie you will think back to your own school days and realise how much you missed those times of being together with your friends.

There will be hilarious moments but also sad moments that will move you to tears. This film teaches us what it means to be a true friend. The music used in this film also add a sense of nostalgia to this film. I highly recommend this film for people that have been out of high school for more than 5 years and endured the hardships of life wanting to feel the care-freeness back in high school. This movie is definitely a must see.

Up

Up is a 2009 Pixar animated comedy, drama and adventure movie starring Edward Asner and Jordan Nagai. Edward Asner stars as Carl Fredrickson, a retired elderly man who is determined to achieve his lifelong dream of travelling to South America and to finish his promise to his lifelong love who passed away. Jordan Nagai stars as the young Wilderness Explorer, Russell, who by accident, accompanies Carl on their trip to South Africa.

The animated montage which shows the relationship of Carl and his Wife Ellie aging together from the time they met when they were young till the passing of Ellie is an emotional and heartfelt scene is definitely one of my favourites.

After landing in South America, they run into an idol of Carl’s, who is determined at all costs to capture a rare bird and takes Carl and Russel into custody for impeding on his investigations. Will Carl and Russel escape and free the bird? Will Carl finally complete his promise to his late wife? It contains a range of emotions for the viewer from tears of sadness and tears of joy.  This epic adventure is one to not miss!

New Police Story

New Police Story is 2004 cop thriller starring Asia’s biggest action star Jackie Chan. Jackie stars as Wing a proud senior inspector of the Hong Kong police force who has never lost a case and cracks every case in record time. The movie opens with a drunken Wing staggering through the streets in Hong Kong. After throwing up, he collapses unconscious into an alleyway and you see a person in a hat and trench coat leaping lightly through the alleyway to crouch down beside him. The film then flashbacks to a time before Wing became like this where he was respected and admired by everyone.

The movie then switches to a group of five teenagers wearing masks sitting on the top of a building laughing maniacally. The youths rob a bank and deliberately alert the cops so they can massacre them. After this incident Wing promises on television to bring these teenagers to justice and with great confidence leads a squad to the teenager’s hideout, an abandoned warehouse.

However this operation went terribly wrong as Wing’s team is picked of one by one, and are all hanging on the ceiling while Wing is forced into playing games with the gang. As the only surviving member of this operation Wing breaks down covered in guilt as he feels responsible for his whole team’s death and sinks into drunken depression. How did this operation go so wrong for Wing’s team? This all changes until he meets Fung a street smart youth. With Fung’s help Wing gets back on his feet and this time will he be able to capture the gang? This is too good of a film to miss.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer is a 2013 sci-fi thriller starring many Korean, American and English stars. The film is set in the future where the governments of the world attempt to control global warming by releasing a substance into the atmosphere designed to lower temperature. This experiment to stop global warming went terribly wrong resulting in earth becoming an uninhabitable wasteland. This ice age killed all life on earth except for the inhabitants on Snowpiercer – a perpetually moving massive train circling the globe that carries earth’s only remaining human livings.

You will be thrust into the thick of things right from the start as seventeen years have passed since the world was frozen over and chaos has risen aboard Snowpiercer. This is because a class system has been developed over time with the poor residing the back of the train while the wealthy upper class reside the front of the train. The poor are sick of their terrible living conditions and attempt to seize control of the engine.

Previous rebellions have always failed however this time takes they have discovered the location of the security expert who designed the doors of this train. The further they get the more terrifying truths are uncovered.  This film will be a breathtaking experience and will be a film that you would want to watch again to understand more and ponder on the questions asked by the ending.

Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 science fiction action movie directed by James Cameron, starring Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. You will be fast tracked to the 22nd century in where humans are trying to mine a very rare material found on the moon Pandora, humans must use ‘avatars’ to inhabit on this star.

For those who have seen Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans or Wrath of the Titians, you must know who Sam Worthington is and what he brings into a film. He plays the main character, Jake Sully, a disabled former marine, is one of the avatars and is sent to destroy the natives and their homeland in order to secure a mining platform. Situation changes when he sympathises with them. Will he obey his orders? Or will he turn his back on those who gave him a second chance?

The detail put into creating a world, such as close to scientifically possible including animals, plants air composition is just astounding, James Cameron deserves high appraise for his efforts. The sophistication of creating a new language is just amazing. This two and a half hour epic movie has everything from action to romance and a variety of emotions for the viewer to experience. It is definitely in my list of must watch movies.

Infernal Affairs

Infernal Affairs is a 2002 crime action thriller starring two of Hong Kong’s biggest movie stars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. You will be transported effortlessly into the world of police and triads in modern day Hong Kong.  Andy stars as Ming, a high ranking police inspector who is secretly a triad member planted in the police force. Tony stars as Yan a triad member who is secretly an undercover policeman.
The film starts off with a young Ming being assigned by the triad leader to enter the police academy while a young Yan is thrown out of the police academy while secretly assigned to work undercover in the triads. The film jumps to ten years later where the police haven’t been able to capture the triads due Ming feeding them information while the triads are suspicious of how the police know of their illegal dealings due to Yan feeding them information. Both sides soon realise that there is a mole within them. Ming and Yan who live a mirrored existence try not to be killed by either side while also trying to uncover each other climaxes to an unpredictable ending.

This unforeseeable, emotional ending will provide a feeling that justice is not always served and sacrifice is not always recognised in time.  There are romantic subplots that aren’t overused and calm, classical music which add a lighter taste to the film. This film will grip you and not let you go!
